mIRC Tips by Mentality

Here's some tips you might find useful to know in mIRC. There's numerous things that are overlooked in mIRC that come in handy, and a lot of people don't even know they exist! I've written this document in the form of a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) to make it easier to read. This document assumes you're using the latest version of mIRC.

Copying and Pasting

Q: How do you copy text?

A: In most programs you need to highlight the text with your mouse, right click and then click on 'Copy' (or press CTRL+C). You will find that in mIRC if you highlight something the highlight just disappears! Amazingly, this means mIRC has copied the text automagically without any human intervention. Once you highlight the text and let go, you're ready to paste :)

Q: Ok, but that doesn't copy colour codes. How do I do that?

A: All you have to do is hold down CTRL whilst you highlight the text. Let go of the mouse BEFORE you let go of CTRL.

Q: I keep bloody pasting text by accident, it's getting me in trouble. Is there a way to limit the amount I paste?

A: Yup! There is an mIRC option that does this. Go to ALT+O > Other > Confirm and change the number at the bottom of that dialog to the number of lines you want to be warned of when pasting.
Accidental Clicks

Q: Grr, I keep accidentally disconnecting myself by hitting the disconnect button, is there a way to prevent being disconnected with that weird lightning button?

A: You can't disable it completely, but you can make it only disconnect you if you click it twice. Once again go to ALT+O > Other > Confirm- and check the appropriate box.

Q: Grr again! I keep closing mIRC with that 'X' in the top. Can I stop it?!

A: Yep, are you blind?! Once again, go to ALT+O > Other > Confirm and check the boxes you want to apply when you try and close mIRC or a status window.
Locking

Q: I don't want my brother/sister to keep opening mIRC and screwing things up and/or posing as me on IRC. Can I prevent them from having access to mIRC?

A: mIRC does have a Lock feature, yes. Go to ALT+O > Other > Lock and you can set a password there. If you want mIRC to ask for a password when you try and open mIRC check the box 'On startup'.

Q: What if I go away from the screen briefly and don't want to close mIRC and only minimise it? Can I stop it from being opened from the taskbar?

A: Yes - when you minimise mIRC press CTRL+minimise and then when it's attempted to be opened the password will be requested.

Windows and the Switchbar

Q: The Tile Windows button horizontally tiles..can I vertically tile the windows?

A: Simply press SHIFT whilst you click on the tile button.

Q: Hm, I don't like the switchbar windows in that order, can I change the order of them?

A: Yes. Go to Windows > Sort and you can add which windows you wish to be affected by the Sort option and which order they should be displayed in

Q: The switchbar is really packed tight, I can't see all the channel names. Can I make it bigger?

A: You can increase the number of lines of the switchbar in ALT+O > Display. Choose the number of lines from the drop down list in that section.

Other Tips

Q: I'm used to having ALT+A to access Aliases, but this was changed. Can I change it back?

A: Sure can. Go to View > Favorites and change the tick to be next to 'Tools menu'. You can then use ALT+A to access Aliases as before. Remember that ALT+D also does this.

Q: Bah, every time I disconnect I have to keep typing /server to reconnect. Can't mIRC do this automatically?

A: Yes, this is in mIRC options. Go to ALT+O > Connect > Options and check the box "Reconnect on disconnection".

Q: Can mIRC make use of SSL connections?

A: Yes, you need to manually add DLLs to the mIRC directory or your SYSTEM32 folder. For further information go to http://www.mirc.co.uk/ssl.html. Also see /help SSL in mIRC.

Q: What key combinations are available in mIRC? Some usual ones aren't working for me...

A: See /help key combinations in mIRC for a full list, there's some handy ones!

Q: How can I hide that annoying Ping! Pong? message that appears in my status window?

A: Go to ALT+O > IRC > Options and check the box "Hide ping! pong? event".

Q: Can I use Agents with mIRC?

A: Yes. It can get quite complicated depending on what you want to do, far too much to explain here on it's own. See http://www.mirc.co.uk/agents.html for further help. This page may also be of use. You can also type /help Agents in mIRC. The mIRC Agents options are available in ALT+O > Sounds > Agents but do be aware that option won't be available until you install Agents on Windows (XP/ME/2K have them preinstalled).

Conclusion

I hope this has been useful to you. It contains quite a few tips in mIRC that people do not know when first using mIRC, and some that even advanced users may not be aware of. If you can think of something to add to it however, please contact me, Mentality, or another mirc.net administrator.
