Once you've made a lot of friends on IRC, you'll problably start
to wonder when they are on IRC and when they are not on IRC. mIRC
contains the perfect feature for this- The notify list.
The notify list allows you to specify nicknames of users whom you
want to look for when you're connected to IRC. mIRC will notify you
whenever a nickname joins or leaves the IRC network you are on. You
will also be informed if no users in your list are on IRC when you
first connect.
The simplest way to add users to your notify list is through
notify options, in mIRC's Address Book.

To open the Address Book, press Alt+B or click on toolbar button
. From there, go to the Notify tab to
edit your notify list.
- The 'Enable Notify' checkbox will determine whether or not this feature is enabled. You need to tick this to use the notify list.
- This listbox will show you the current users in your notify list and any notes you have attached to them. You can select a nickname
and use the buttons on the right (3) to Delete or Edit the entry.
- To create a new entry click the Add button.
- Type the nickname you want to put in your notify list. On IRC, the case of nicknames does not matter. Tye is the same nickname as tye.
- Attach an optional note to the nickname. If supply a note it will be given when the person comes online or goes offline.
- You may select a sound to play when this specific user signs online or offline.
- Click OK to add the user to your notify list.
You can also add and remove nicknames from the notify list by
using the /notify command. In it's simplest form, you
type /notify nickname. This will add a user to your notify
list. You may also specify a note after the user, as in /notify
nickname note.
You can also turn notify on and off by typing /notify on
or /notify off.
If you prefix a nickname with a plus sign (+) then mIRC will do a
/whois on the nickname when they come online. However,
if you do this on too many nicknames then the IRC server might
disconnect you for flooding, so it's best to use it only if you
really need to. You can also enable/disable whois for each nickname
in the Address Book. (notify section)
You can manually force mIRC to update the notify list
(and display who is online) by typing /notify with no
parameters.
Press Alt+N (or toolbar button
) while connected to open
the notify window. This is simply a window listing all users on
your notify list currently on IRC.
mIRC will also display in your status window whenever a user on
your notify list joins or leaves IRC.
